Anson Varsity Volleyball. Fall 2018. Captain.

In volleyball and softball I have served leadership roles by being a captain. These roles have been very meaningful to me. I have truly had to set an example for my teammates by being a good player but also showing good character. This leadership role has pushed me to hold myself accountable in all situations. Taking on these positions allowed me to not only learn more about the game but to also learn more about myself. I was truly able to see how I can learn and help others learn by taking on these leadership roles.

I grew up in the small town of Wadesboro located in North Carolina. My hobbies include community involvement as well as varsity sports, honor society, and various clubs. At a very young age I developed strong passion for softball and volleyball. I thoroughly enjoy playing sports and I believe it is something I will always continue to do. Being dually enrolled and participating in many extracurricular activities can be challenging, but due to my time management and perseverance, I have balanced it extremely well.

This summer I was given an opportunity that required me to step away from my comfort zone and a place I call home. I was selected to attend North Carolina Governor’s School at Meredith University. Being from such a small town, it seemed daunting to leave all I have ever known for 6 weeks. This opportunity turned into a life-changing experience that shaped who I am today. Many could not understand why I would choose to spend my entire summer vacation doing more schoolwork. However, it was about so much more than that.

The past two years I have taken Biomedical Science classes that have introduced me to the amazing field of Health Care. These classes were a major challenge for me. I faced many setbacks while in the class, but I did not let that stop me from earning an A and passing the exam. The summer of 2017 I was given the opportunity to do a hands-on internship at Carolinas Medical Center through the Youth Career Connect program. I was able to assist in a variety of tasks such as taking blood pressure, giving intravenous fluid to patients, and even suturing. In addition to the knowledge I gained, I was allowed to see what it is like to pursue an occupation in the medical field. By rotating through the laboratory, radiology department, and emergency department, I was able to more clearly define my areas of interest. I hope to become a physician. After my internship, I was the first chosen to take on the leadership role of speaking about my internship and its impact on me.

North Carolina's Governor's School. Group members and group leader. Research-based project regarding GMOs.

I was chosen to be the group leader of a research-based project on GMOs. GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. For the project, my group had to create a GMO of our own. This was challenging since we were unfamiliar with the procedure we had to do.  This project pushed me out of my comfort zone but strengthened my leadership skills. This was an important lesson for me and I believe it prepared me for college in many ways. I learned how to be independent, responsible, and courageous. This summer not only shaped me as a student, but also as a leader.

My learning style is visual. I learn better by reading and seeing pictures. I often create charts that help me better visualize things. I do not like being bored and I like to take on challenges. When studying, I use flashcards to learn new words or concepts. I also like using vibrant colors to organize my notes.

Although I have always possessed leadership skills, I can definitely say Governor's School was my turning point to realize just how I can use my leadership to impact others. Through my service to others and completing community service, I lead to help others. When in the classroom, I lead to learn. I do this by taking on roles such as being the group leader because I know it is only going to push me to be a better student. Learning is something I never want to stop doing. As I previously mentioned, I want to become a physician. In order to reach this level, I must truly be dedicated to my success and learning. When I am leading to learn, I am only bettering myself because I am pushing myself to be the best version of myself. I can definitely see how I have used my leadership to learn but also to help others.
